"Sol and Roger and the language school were amazing. They took me in like I was a part of their family. I learned tons of Spanish and rapidly. I highly recommend this site!"

  • A large percentage of Mexico's rural population lacks resources for health care. For specialized care, most patients must take an 8 hour bus ride from the coast

  • Due to conditions of rural life, health services require patterns of delivery quite different from those in cities. Most problems arise from the dispersion of the population and the difficulties of transportation

If you are interested in applying for this program for June and/or July please contact us before you apply to determine the availability of spots! Thank you.

The Tropical Medicine and Rural Health program takes place in Puerto Escondido, a small town in the state of Oaxaca. There, students will gain exposure to many of the tropical diseases that are common in the area. In addition to clinical rotations, students will take medical and conversational Spanish classes at a local school.

During clinical rotations, students will have the opportunity to see Puerto Escondido's healthcare system in a variety of settings. Opportunities range from working in primary care clinics to participating in rural disease control programs. One of the key health problems students will encounter in their clinical rotations is malaria, common in tropical regions. Students may also witness cases of Chagas, dengue, and common parasites.

Type 2 diabetes has also become a prevalent health problem in this town, and it is now one of the leading causes of death in Puerto Escondido. In addition to learning about tropical diseases, students will be assisting doctors in diagnosing and treating diabetes in communities that often lack the necessary resources to handle the disease on their own. Students may also get the chance to participate in Malaria Brigades, a common health initiative for malaria control.

CFHI programs offer participants the opportunity to learn more about health issues that transcend national borders, class, ethnicity, and cultural divisions.  By participating in CFHI’s global health education you will gain a unique insight into healthcare systems of developing countries and increase your cultural competency. Increasing one’s awareness of other cultures (cultural competency) is becoming increasingly relevant for healthcare professionals as industrialized countries become more ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse. Click here to read an article and learn more about why cultural competency is important for today’s healthcare workforce.
