Public Health & Community Medicine in India

" It was such an eye opening experience. In the programs, we were able to go observe doctors in the OPD as well as surgeries. The program caters to what you want out of the internship so there is a lot of flexabilty in where you go shadow and what you want to see. On the weekends, we were able to travel all over the country."
-Teary Chan, December 2009 (Post-Bacc Pre-Med Oregon State University)

  • 50% of India's urban population lives below the poverty line
  • Tuberculosis is a major public health problem in India. A total of about 46,000 beds are functioning in the country for treatment of seriously ill and emergent TB patients

"Public health is the science and art of promoting health. It does so based on the understanding that health is a process engaging social, mental, spiritual and physical well-being. Public health acts on the knowledge that health is a fundamental resource to the individual, to the community and to society as a whole and must be supported by soundly investing in living conditions that create, maintain and protect health." -Kickbusch, Ilona (1989)

For various reasons, mostly of political economy, public funds for health services in India have focused largely on medical services. This is reflected in a virtual absence of modern public health regulations and of systematic planning and delivery of public health services. In this program, participants will witness the challenges of health care delivery in developing economies, with special emphasis on the spread of AIDS in India
, tuberculosis, and management of infectious diseases.
Students will be exposed to key public health challenges facing India such as immunizations, environmental sanitation, waste management, safe drinking water practices, and social reforms through education, training and awareness campaigns. In addition, participants will be exposed to the role of voluntary organizations in the delivery of health care and the importance and impact of culture in public health. Please click here to read an article from Sulabh International Social Service Organization about a recent rotation by CFHI students. This program is unique from other CFHI programs: This program combines service-learning opportunities in public health and clinical settings. Unlike CFHI's traditional programs, this site will focus more on learning about public health issues facing the region and participating, in a limited way in the provision of healthcare at clinical facilities.

This unique program combines interactions and discussions with the senior public health professionals with clinical work at government and charitable hospitals, rotations in nonprofit organizations, and lectures with senior policy makers. These experiences will complement participants' clinical immersion in hospitals in and around Delhi. The program is spread across rural and urban areas so participants get an overview of challenges and strategies in both settings. They will have an opportunity to see healthcare efforts in the rural area of Sawai Madhopur, and will rotate in the historic walled city of Jaipur.

CFHI programs offer participants the opportunity to learn more about health issues that transcend national borders, class, ethnicity, and cultural divisions.  By participating in CFHI’s global health education you will gain a unique insight into healthcare systems of developing countries and increase your cultural competency. Increasing one's awareness of other cultures (cultural competency) is becoming increasingly relevant for healthcare professionals as industrialized countries become more ethnically, culturally and lingustically diverse. Click here to read an article and learn more about why cultural competency is important for today’s healthcare workforce.
