  Amazon Indigenous Health, Ecuador

"Living with the shaman in the Amazon was by far the greatest experience, learning about the medicinal plants. Participating in their sacred annual waterfall journey was an unexpected plus."

  • Geographical and socioeconomic difficulties hinder indigenous persons and nonindigenous persons in the Ecuadorian Amazon from accessing adequate health care
  • Because of the special conditions of rural life, health services require patterns of delivery quite different from those in cities

This CFHI program is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about indigenous communities in the Amazon region of Ecuador and their traditional practices in an increasingly developed world. Participants will learn how the community confronts the modern world and allopathic medicine while simultaneously utilizing ancestral knowledge to sustain their ecological habitat and belief systems in traditional medicine. Participants will understand where traditional medicine and allopathic medicine intersect, which uses allopathic interventions, in the context of ancestral healing traditions.

The Amazon Indigenous Health Program begins with one week of Spanish classes and an orientation to Ecuadorian culture in the capital city of Quito, including clinical rotations at a local tertiary care hospital. The remaining 3 weeks of the program will be spent in Puyo and its surrounding indigenous villages, sharing daily activities with jungle communities. Please note that this program focuses on traditional indigenous medicine and its main emphasis is not on clinical rotations. Please see the "Amazon Community Medicine" program for a more clinically oriented program.

Participants will also be able to observe how traditional medicine and allopathic medicine intersect and learn about local efforts to bring these two medical belief systems closer together. Participants will:

  • Learn about indigenous healthcare beliefs by visiting local indigenous communities such as Shiwakocha (Kichwa), Uwijint (Shuar) and Jatari (mixed)
  • Identify meeting points between both medical belief systems
  • Learn about difficulties for patients in accessing healthcare due to geographical and cultural barriers and the efforts by local healthcare personnel to overcome these barriers (i.e. community health visits)
  • Support alternative community development initiatives through community visits

CFHI programs offer participants the opportunity to learn more about health issues that transcend national borders, class, ethnicity, and cultural divisions.  By participating in CFHI’s global health education you will gain a unique insight into healthcare systems of developing countries and increase your cultural competency. Increasing one's awareness of other cultures (cultural competency) is becoming increasingly relevant for healthcare professionals as industrialized countries become more ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse. Click here to read an article and learn more about why cultural competency is important for today’s healthcare workforce.
