- Faculty Development Workshop: Integrating Experiential Learning into Global and Public Health Programs & Courses
Faculty and administrators alike recognize the importance of experiential education (where students are learning in a community-based or other ‘real world’ setting) for undergraduate and graduate global health, health professions and public health programs. However, successful integration of these experiences into the curriculum requires knowledge of theories, practices, frameworks, and collaborations that often go beyond our expertise in academic content areas.
The Workshop is a collaboration of the Interamerican Center for Global Health (CISG), American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), Allegheny College, Working Group on Global Activities of Students at Pre-Health Levels (GASP), Child Family Health International (CFHI), and others. As such the Workshop draws on leaders in Global Health Education, International Education, Higher Education, Community Engagement, and Experiential Learning.
This Workshop is appropriate for faculty, global education directors, instructional designers and administrative teams who have interest in integrating experiential learning (including community-engaged learning, volunteering, study abroad, internships, and transformative learning) into Global Health and Public Health courses and programs.
The program is committed to fostering spaces for educators and administrators to share with each other and allow a deep process of peer-to-peer learning in an inter-professional and international environment. The goal of this workshop is to model effective and ethical experiential learning in global health education. This workshop brings together diverse perspectives and harnesses educational processes for cross-fertilization across disciplines. Participants experience first-hand what global health experiential education can look like, with its different nuances, challenges, and opportunities.
