This rotation is at the premiere pediatric hospital for the region located in the capital city of Accra, Ghana.
Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital is a historical medical and global health landmark because Dr. Cicely Williams, the first director of Maternal and Child Welfare for the World Health Organization, Geneva, worked there in her early career. She was instrumental in advancing maternal and child health in developing nations. She first identified the cause and found prevention and a cure for the disease Kwashiorkor, a severe form of protein-energy malnutrition.
The hospital has inpatient and outpatient services including a general pediatric ward, urgent care, nutritional rehabilitation, radiology, NICU, physiotherapy, Reproductive and Child Health, Surgery, Family Planning, Dental, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, Asthma, HIV/AIDS, Child Developmental and Sickle Cell Clinic. In Ghana, 1 in 27 infants dying before their first birthday on earth, with 1 in 19 dying before their fifth birthdate. The evidence shows that newborn mortality is highest in infants from impoverished households which account for around 71% of all under-1 deaths in Ghana. The current goal is to reduce the under-five mortality rate from 60 deaths per 1000 live births in 2014 to 40 deaths per 1000 live births by 2024 and 10 deaths per 1000 live births by 2034. This rotation provides diverse exposure to pediatric medicine in a variety of wards, inpatient and outpatient contexts. Accra is the backdrop of this rotation allowing for exploration of the pan-African movement, liberation, and de-colonialization.
