Rotations in Cape Town take place with the backdrop of a country continuing to rise from its history, grappling with racism, and confronting health disparities.
South Africa is referred to as “The Rainbow Nation” because of its multicultural, multilingual society. Apartheid allowed entrenched racism to dominate social systems on the heels of colonialism. It took place in South Africa from 1948-1993, but its effects are still very evident today. During Apartheid huge health disparities existed, For example, in 1981, there was 1 physician for every 330 Whites but only 1 for every 91 000 Blacks. Infant mortality was 20% in the Black population compared with 2.7% in the White population. Currently, disparities continue in health finance, access, and quality. As of 2018 n 2018, 73% of white South Africans had access to private health insurance, compared to 10% of Black South Africans. Commentators have characterized this as a long, low echo.
