This rotation allows you to bolster your perspective on global public health.
Population-based to prevention and treatment of disease is essential in resource constrained settings, where it is more cost effective than individual level clinical care and more relevant to ensure basic health needs. India has increased its investment in health by over 80% in the past two decades, still it spends 3.8% of its GDP on health, which is $78 USD per person (India has the worlds largest population at almost 1.5 billion). The Indian public health and clinical care systems are made up of public, private, non-profit, and academic organizations. This rotation allows you to get a sweeping understanding of India’s public health system. You will explore the non-governmental organizations addressing clean water and sanitation (WASH), harm reduction with IV drug users, care for houseless youth, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and women’s empowerment.
Based in India’s capital, Delhi, this rotation also has opportunities to witness clinical care in India’s private hospitals/clinics, and palliative care services in action.
