Experience village health on the frontline as community health workers bridge the healthcare gap.
Community Health Workers (CHW) are increasingly recognized as an essential extension of the brick-and-mortar health system. This rotation allows you to explore the training, monitoring, evaluation, and community dynamics of community health workers.
You will work alongside a non-governmental organization charged with scaling community health workers for Mykono District northeast of Kampala, Uganda. Learn how clean water sources are sustained and burden of disease is addressed by building the last mile of health workforce and infrastructure.
Known locally as Village Health Teams (VHT), these trusted community members diagnose, treat, and monitor a variety of illnesses including hypertension, diabetes, malaria, diarrheal illness, mental illness, substance use disorder, respiratory illness, and much more. Health Research and Policy featured key opportunities and challenges for CHW programs in their October 2021 edition: available here.
This rotation allows you to experience first hand the creation of health infrastructure directly linked to combating suffering and the disproportionate burden of disease in Sub-Saharan Africa.
